Wise use of space. Before starting your project, you have to take note of the area that you are willing to landscape. A large area can require too much work and lots of your time. Likewise a small area might not be enough to accommodate all of your plans. So, do make sure that you have just the right amount of space to work on.

If there is no other option because you only have a small space in your property, at least make a landscape plan that will be best to have in a small space. It will help if you can use fixtures that have sizes that are appropriate with the available space.

Proper arrangement of garden fountains, flower boxes, etc. will also help greatly in creating spaces for pathways.

Be inspired by work of others. If you do not have an idea on how you can start designing your landscape project, you can look into the works of other people. But remember not to copy. There will be no fun in doing that. Instead, learn from what you see and observe and create your own from there.

Follow the rules. There might be some states that have regulations when it comes to landscape designs. Check with local authorities on what these accepted designs are. You might want to do this before you start the project as you have to ensure that everything is according to the laws of the place before you start building.
