Home Teather

Home Teather

Lately my spouse has initiated a campaign to convince me to build a whole home theater facility at the basement. I do understand that her passion for such a facility is due to her great love for the art of movies. But, personally I’d prefer watching a movie at the cinema. Especially this is true for an action movie with a lot of effects. I do find that the experience of the special effects, the detailed close-ups, and landscapes dramatically enhanced on a big screen at the cinema, compared to a smaller screen at home. Something there is lost.

Home theater thus must provide the visual and audio experience as similar as possible to the large screen and the enhanced audio multi-channel at the cinema. This requires a big screen with an adequate projector, or at least, a big TV set with high sensitivity and high refreshing frequency. Furthermore, a good home theater facility requires appropriate audio system, a video player, a DVD player, and of course, an impressive seating set, for you and for your hosts.

The decision and the selection of the proper components is not an easy one. For example, the audio system must be designed carefully to meet your personal experience. Speakers of assumed similar sound quality may sound differently to different people, and different geometry of the room. In addition, the audio system includes several components that you should be familiar with. You need to define whether a single channel or a full multi-channel speaker set is needed, i.e. a 2.1, 5.1 or a 7.1 system, for a full surround sound experience. Rear speakers need to be placed correctly as well as the front speakers and the subwoofer.

Once you have handled the audio component, you need to define and select the video component. Either you would go for a big TV set, High Definition (HDTV) or you go for a wide screen and an enhanced projector. You need to carefully understand the advantages and the disadvantages of LCD technology compared to Plasma and LED TV sets. Differences may appear in terms of brightness, angle of visibility, refreshing frequency, and more.

Then you need to pay attention to the DVD player. If you have an HDTV set you better go for a blu-ray DVD player to fully exploit the resolution of your TV or projector. Video streaming is another technology of providing video to the home and various xtreamers, which support processing of such data, appeared to the market.

Not only that the components are many, almost any electrical firm provides home theater related components. Some of them are: Panasonic, Sharp, Coby, Bose, LG, Philips, Sony and many more. Some of them distribute their products under various branding, in order to differentiate and position the product differently. Some are expert in audio systems, while others are expert in TV set for example.

Some of the companies distribute their systems under various brands, in order position the product differently and set the price accordingly. This way some products are sold at a low-price which are suitable for market stores.

After discussing all this information, no wonder that my spouse had to initiate a massive campaign at home in order to convince me, and change my state of mind. As I already have admitted, I do recognize that movie fans would like to have their own home theater, but I’d personally prefer the good old outdoor cinema, where I can truly immerse with the movie story and scenes, for ninety minutes of joy, without dealing with the endless components, their quality, their vendors, and their prices.
